Subaru Trailseeker: Not Just a Toyota in Drag (NZ First Drive)

Subaru Trailseeker: Not Just a Toyota in Drag (NZ First Drive)

Subaru Trailseeker first drive & review: NZ price, range, power and which version is better.

Subaru’s all-new Trailseeker is fully electric, and not just a Toyota with a Subaru badge on the front. I drove both variants at the NZ launch on tarmac and gravel, looking at space, range, power and tech. The verdict? They’re both very competent vehicles, but the entry-level AWD version strikes me as the value winner.

Pricing (NZ)
Trailseeker AWD: $68,990
Trailseeker Touring: $72,490

Key specs
Battery: 74.7 kWh (both versions)
Official range: 533 km (AWD) / 488 km (Touring).
Motors: Dual Motor, 280 kW, 536 Nm
Ground clearance: 211 mm
DC fast charging: up to 150 kW (10–80% in 30 minutes)
Vehicle-to-load: 1.5 kW
Boot: 595 L (Touring) / 609 L (AWD)

Touring vs AWD
Of course the big question is which is the better purchase? As often happens, my ‘tightwad gland’ is pulling me towards the more affordable AWD option.
While the Touring option adds a sunroof, leather seats, Harman Kardon audio and 20-inch wheels, the AWD has the same performance, slightly more range and costs $3,500 less. Unless you really want that sunroof, I’d say keep that money in your pocket and get the AWD instead.
In fact, while trying both versions I found the AWD with its 18″ wheels to be slightly more poised on the roughest of gravel sections.
