Mitsubishi’s all-new, fifth-generation Pajero is the halo car that the Japanese carmaker desperately needs. And we’ve driven the brand-spanking 4WD in its homeland to see if the newcomer has what it takes to challenge key rivals in Ford Everest and Toyota Prado.
Arriving in Australia in December, priced from $68,490, the new 2027 Pajero technically builds on the latest Triton body-on-frame ute DNA, with refinements, promising to bury the old, agricultural Pajero Sport with a newfound mix of sophistication and rugged all-terrain capability.
The new Pajero fits a 150kW and 480Nm ‘second-generation’ 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four with variable-vane single turbocharging, backed by an eight-speed auto and, of course, four-wheel drive. But it mixes this traditional recipe with newfound prowess in interior fitout and on-road/off-road manners.
Senior contributor Nathan Ponchard takes the fifth-gen Pajero, in essentially Aussie ‘GSR’ spec, for a test drive at the Okazaki Proving Ground, in Japan, to see whether this all important model has what it takes to become the new brand figurehead for Mitsubishi.
